All Mac® users know about the Mac App Store®, and most have probably used it to get an app or two. If you’re also a Parallels Desktop® for Mac user, there’s another store you should check out: the Microsoft Store.
Maybe an HDMI to thunderbolt? No capture cards, unless lag free. The MacBook Pro does not support the option to be used as an external display (also called Target Display mode). The only Mac which supports it is the iMac. You can use a Late 2009 or Mid 2010 27-inch iMac as a display for your Xbox 360 by using a special adapter like the Kanex XD. It is not compatible with any other Mac and it is not compatible with Xbox One or PlayStation 4. A lot of people have wondered if it was possible to use MacBook Pro as a monitor for Xbox 360 using the HDMI. If you are in this category, the answer is a simple yes. Setting up your MacBook pro monitor as a monitor for your Xbox can be done in the few steps listed below.
Microsoft’s Xbox chief has hinted we’ll likely see an Xbox app for TVs in 2021. The smart TV app could allow owners to stream Xbox games to a TV. Download this app from Microsoft Store for Windows 10, Windows 10 Mobile, Windows 10 Team (Surface Hub). See screenshots, read the latest customer reviews, and compare ratings for Xbox Console Companion.
You can run the Xbox app on your Mac by installing Windows 10. Soon you'll also be able to play Xbox games on your Mac with Xbox Live Anywhere. By Christopher Minasians, Contributor.
The Microsoft Store is accessible from Windows 8 or 10—but in all practical terms, this means onlvidy Windows 10, since Windows 8 is used so rarely these days.
The Microsoft Store is for all things to play or consume on Windows 10: movies, music, apps, books, fonts, extensions to the Edge browser, and even hardware. In Apple® terms, it’s iTunes®, the Mac App Store, iBooks®, and the Apple Store® all rolled into one. However, in this blog post, I will focus mainly on apps available from the Microsoft Store.
Accessing the Store
Just as Apple has the App Store app, Microsoft has the Microsoft Store app. (See Figure 1.)
Here are some apps I have downloaded from the Microsoft Store, none of which are available on the Mac App Store:
Games | Productivity | Learning | Just Interesting |
Age of Empires: Castle Siege | Microsoft Whiteboard | Kakitai: Learn Japanese by Writing | Nebo* |
Crossy Road* | Office 365 Home* | Sensavis Visual Learning Tool | Plumbago |
Microsoft Mahjong | Sway* | Penbook
Age of Empires: Definitive Edition | Delve* | GestureSign
Age of Sparta | Microsoft Math | Microsoft Font Maker
Translator* | |||
Fluid Math |
*Available for the iPhone®/iPad® in the Apple App Store.
All of these apps run fine for me on my MacBook Pro® in a Windows 10 VM using Parallels Desktop 14—with the single exception of Age of Empires: Definitive Edition. I used every setting I know to get this app to run with acceptable performance, but in the end, I gave up. (Age of Empires is my favorite game of all time, as I posted back in 2014.)
You can predict whether an app in the Microsoft Store will run in Parallels Desktop by looking at its system requirements from within your virtual machine. (See Figure 2.)
Figures 3–5 show some other apps from the Microsoft Store running in Parallels Desktop on my MacBook Pro.
Video 1 shows some games from the Microsoft Store running in Parallels Desktop 14 on my MacBook Pro:
And Video 2 shows some of the 3D models available for the Sensavis Visual Learning Tool:
As of today, there are about 800,000 Windows 10 apps in the Microsoft Store, as opposed to only about 11,000 in the Mac App Store. There are a number of excellent apps in both stores, and the Mac user with Parallels Desktop can take advantage of both to find the perfect app for your needs.
Have you found a particularly useful or novel app on the Microsoft Store? If so, tell us about it in the comments.
Apple Silicon Macs with the M1 processor can run apps built for the iPhone and iPad natively. Learn how to find them and download what you want — plus what limitations they may present.
Apple has released the first Macs running Apple Silicon to customers, which can run apps built for any of the three major Apple platforms. Each app will operate according to some restrictions placed on it by the system, but should be a nearly identical experience to running them on iPhone or iPad.

The Mac has its own App Store which operates identical to the App Stores found on iOS and iPadOS. Apps submitted to the Mac App Store must be reviewed by Apple and fall within certain rules and guidelines for safety and privacy. The addition of iPhone and iPad apps to the Mac App Store has vastly expanded its software catalog.

- Open the Mac App Store
- Click on the search bar in the top left corner
- Search for an app like 'Office'
- Results will default to Mac apps
- Click on 'iPhone and iPad apps' to see results in that category
Apps that appear for search results will vary depending on what the developer offers. Some developers, including Google, Facebook, and King have opted out of offering their apps on Mac.
Some developers offer different apps with different prices per platform, like Airmail or Microsoft. When this is true, the Mac App Store will only show results for the Mac app. Microsoft Word, for example, is available across all of Apple's platforms, but the developer has a Mac-specific version. It is unclear if these search results are an automatic function of the App Store, or if developers with multi-platform apps are opting out of sharing their iPad apps on Mac.

Once you've downloaded an iPad-based app, you'll notice it runs in a smaller window with basic Mac controls. You can mouse over items and trigger some events as expected, but not everything will work smoothly out-of-the-box. Developers will need to optimize their apps for mouse and keyboard based interactions before the app feels native to the Mac.

iPhone apps cannot be resized nor go full screen or split screen. The traffic light buttons don't do anything except minimize the window or close the app.
Bringing touch based apps to the Mac, which doesn't have a touch screen yet, causes some compromise in the app-experience. Many games and apps rely on multi-touch gestures which are not directly translated to mouse gestures. Apple solves for this by asking users to hold the control key down while performing multi-touch gestures on the trackpad.
